Gladys Louise Smith (April 8, 1892 – May 29, 1979), known professionally as Mary Pickford, was a Canadian American film actress and producer. A pioneer in the American film industry with a Hollywood career that spanned five decades, Pickford was one of the most popular actresses of the silent film era.

In 1907, she adopted a family name Pickford and joined the David Belasco troupe, appearing in the long running "The Warrens of Virginia". She began in films in 1909 with the American Mutoscope & Biograph, working with director D.W. Griffith.

In 1911, “Moving Picture Mary” was the first movie star to adorn the cover of the New York Dramatic Mirror, an honor previously bestowed only on theatrical stars. And because moviegoers had already singled Pickford out as a favorite, her success in features was guaranteed.
