Some people love WD 40 and swear by it because they have an experience similar to yours. They spray their firearm down with WD 40, it sits a while and gums up then they spray it with WD 40 and it frees everything up. So WD 40 is the best stuff ever, right? What many don't realize is the best thing to dissolve congealed WD 40 is fresh WD 40.

WD 40. Seriously, although it seems stupid. It penetrates and boosts the color. Does not make it slick, though I thought it would. Over time, it migrates out again, so you have to re apply every so often. I got that tip from a custom knife maker I know. It's strictly cosmetic and totally unnecessary, but does look nice. Really just a shortcut to a natural patina.

A friend of mine said to use WD 40 and a paper towel to get surface rust off. Would this work as well? I would think that would work. Our fleet maintenance guys use WD40 to clean everything. It wouldn't be my first choice if you plan to use the knife for food prep. I've had good luck with coconut oil like @NWPrimate suggested above.

I use, CRC, WD 40, Sulferized cutting oil, light motor oil (though I can feel that one floating the blade over the stone, so I only use it for finish work) and kerosene (which I like).

It worked. Nice blaze burned off the creosote and wd 40 did the rest. Now I need to figure out how to get my 20 pound stove into the back country!
