Father Fermin Lasuén founded Mission San Miguel, the sixteenth mission, on July 25, 1797. The site, in an isolated valley on the Salinas River, was chosen as a way to close the gap between Mission San Antonio de Padua to the north and Mission San Luis Obispo to the south.

Mission San Miguel Arcángel is a Spanish mission in San Miguel, California. It was established on July 25, 1797, by the Franciscan order, on a site chosen specifically due to the large number of Salinan Indians that inhabited the area, whom the Spanish priests wanted to evangelize.

Mission San Miguel named for the Archangel Saint Michael was founded by Franciscan Father Fermin Francisco de Lasuen in 1797, and was meant to close the gap between Mission San Antonio to the north and Mission San Luis Obispo to the south.

Mission San Miguel was established in the ancestral territory of the Salinan peoples. They continue to live in this area that is now called Monterey and San Luis Obispo Counties.

Considering that Mission San Miguel for many years was not maintained by any group, it is amazing that it has escaped the work of vandals and the devastation brought to many missions by weather and natural disasters.

Mission San Miguel Arcangel was founded on July 25, 1797 by Father Fermin Lasuen, Presidente of the California Missions Chain. Named for Saint Michael the Arcangel, it was the 16th mission founded in the 21 mission chain in Alta California.

Hence, the San Miguel Arcángel Mission stood 18 miles far from its Rancho at San Simeon, and its north and south boundaries were nearly 50 miles apart. The fertile fields of this extensive area were kept in production by two Franciscans and their Native neophytes, assisted by a handful of soldiers.

A fire almost destroyed the mission in 1806. There were plans to establish a presidio and some missions directly east of San Miguel, but changes with Mexican independence made it impossible.
