Here's the problem, the stihl setting gage seems to set the air gap too tight, like 0.004" measured between the ignition module arms and the flywheel magnets using a feeler gage set. It seems as though the center coil pick up on the ignition module has a wider air gap. Now my question, what is the proper way to measure an ignition module air gap?
It's SOP to inspect & gap new spark plugs to your desired gap before installing them. They could have been dropped, thereby changing the gap, etc. NEVER assume they are gapped correctly out of the box. How does the manufacturer know what YOU are going to gap them at?
There is a lot of discussion on th350 converter to flex plate gap too large and needs to be shimmed to get the 1 8" to 3 16" gap but nothing on a gap that is less than 1 8" which is what I have. The transmission has been gone through and looked at after the problem and I replaced the flex plate...
Both manufacturers say to use the same gap for both the top and second ring. I had always went about .002" wider on the second ring for controlling blowby to reduce the risk of ring flutter. What are the engine builders' on this site's thoughts on this? Set them to .019" .021" or .019" .019"?
The deck lid is slightly curved as well but probably only has about a 1 32nd gap in the middle, but combined with the 1 8" gap on the quarter it causes a noticeable problem. I tried using a 5' long wood clamp I have to pull the quarters together at the middle of the trunk opening and they wouldn't budge.
Things that determine resistance is the plug wire conductor (metal conducts better than carbon impregnated fiberglass strands), the spark gap, and the resistance in the plug (the R in the designation of an AC delco plug denotes an internal air gap to prevent power from bleeding off too soon).
If the gap is greater than .187” install a .060” flat washer between the torque converter and flexplate. 11. Finish installing the cross member, exhaust, driveshaft, etc. Add 5 quarts of good quality transmission fluid. Start the engine and immediately add 2 more quarts. Check the fluid and finish filling the transmission to proper level.
Closer gap and or faster speed = higher induced voltage. Since the field can only build when the points are closed and drops when the points open, the timing of the ignition points is also critical.
The key is, if the compression ratio goes up, drop the gap down. GM made a real mistake with HEI performance during their Oldsmobile years, they specified a spark plug gap of .060, and even later, .080.
Building a 454 030 overbore and pre gapped rings are 25 26 thou gap. That is a bit more than I would like. Mild street build. Naturally aspirated. ok, or do I have to buy file fit that cost a fortune? Will this gap give too much blow by?
