Jonah was the son of Amittai, who came from Gath hepher in Zebulun (called Gittah hepher in Joshua 19:10 13). He was the earliest of the prophets and close behind Elisha in his place in the Old Testament.
Jonah (flourished 785 bce) was one of the 12 Minor Prophets in the Hebrew Bible and Christian Old Testament. His narrative is part of a larger book, The Twelve, in the Jewish canon, and stands alone as the Book of Jonah in Christian scripture.
The book of Jonah explores God's mercy, human rebellion, and the universality of redemption through a narrative about a reluctant prophet. Divided into four chapters, it highlights themes of disobedience, repentance, and divine compassion.
THE BOOK OF JONAH The story of Jonah has great theological import. It concerns a disobedient prophet who rejected his divine commission, was cast overboard in a storm and swallowed by a great fish, rescued in a marvelous manner, and returned to his starting point.
Jonah is unique among the books of the prophets, which are typically collections of God’s words spoken through a prophet. This book doesn’t really focus on the words of a prophet; rather, it’s a subversive story about a prophet who resents his God for loving his enemies.
