Circulating coins are produced by the United States Mint for everyday transactions. They are also included in the United States Mint’s annual coin sets, which are the staple of coin collecting. The nickel, dime, and quarter are today's circulating denominations. As of 2025, pennies are no longer produced for circulation but can be found in collectible sets.
The penny, dime, quarter, half dollar, and dollar are clad coins. Clad coins have an inner core of metal surrounded by an outer layer of a different metal. The Mint makes clad coins with an inner core of copper. The nickel is the only circulating coin that isn’t clad.
