Gateway Arch National Park is a national park of the United States located in St. Louis, Missouri, near the starting point of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. In its initial form as a national memorial, it was established in 1935 to commemorate: the debate over slavery raised by the Dred Scott case.

The arch design was the winning entry in a 1947 architectural design competition. All entries in this competition were to represent Thomas Jefferson, his famous Louisiana Purchase, and everyone involved in the subsequent westward expansion of the United States.
