The greatest lake to sail on is Beaver Dam lake in Northern Indiana. I spent my youth sailing the summers away on that lake. The lake is a little under 400 acres. But, for a 12 year old kid and a old wood Lighting sailboat, it was every bit the adventures I read about in the books. Breaking waves that were 2 feet tall.

If the grommets are every two feet for the length of the luff, then, they're probably for sail slugs. Guernsey's about the worst lake to sail: shallow, hot, buggy, and (as you note) essentially drained dry every summer. The draw down usually begins around July 4th, but in these drought years it was never full to start.
Rearrange for sailing, sail for a few hours. Some days, we would sail through lunch, and eat sandwiches. Other times, we would stop at a beach or anchor and eat lunch ashore. If we did dinner ashore, we had to finish cleanup before the mosquitos came out at sunset. Although it slows you even more, towing a small dinghy probably adds to the fun.
