If a short sale closed in 2025 but you didn’t get a 2025 Form 1099 B or Form 1099 DA (or substitute statement) for it because you entered into it before 2011, report it on Form 8949 in Part I with box C or box I checked or Part II with box F or box L checked (whichever applies).
The answer to your question is that a nondividend distribution (one, or more, it doesn't matter) actually won't affect your taxes at all this year and won't directly appear anyplace on your tax return (Form 1040 or elsewhere).
The distribution statement you receive from a mutual fund or corporation often includes an ambiguous entry in Box 3 of Form 1099 DIV labeled “Nondividend Distributions.”
If this type of distribution is given to you, then you should also receive a statement, or more commonly a Form 1099 DIV. A non dividend distribution will be shown in Box 3 on this form.
If you have a great deal of investment activity reported on Form 1099 B, you can enter the aggregate proceeds from your short term transactions directly on Schedule D instead of individually listing each security in your Form 8949.

You should have received a Form 1099 DIV with these distributions listed in Box 3. When entering this in your tax software, look specifically for a section about "non dividend distributions" or "return of capital." Most tax programs have a dedicated entry for this.
